In general, organic food production is "sustainable" - it preserves the soil and helps to the water and air (not to mention the food!) unpolluted. Organic meat is no different. Calling meat organic involves not just how they are treated, but how they are fed. Not surprisingly, organically raised animals receive organic feed, and are often grass-fed. Conventionally farmed animals consume the pesticides and other chemical substances that their feed is treated with, and they may well exist as residues that they pass along to us. But there are even more dangerous substances that conventional farmers use - hormones and steroids to stimulate unnatural growth, antibiotics to treat ill animals, or even rendered animal byproducts to feed them. The use of synthetic substances and genetically modified organisms gives rise to health questions in humans, including early puberty, allergies, and BSE (Mad Cow Disease).

Organic farming does not use any chemical substances to obtain as much meat as they can - the economic profit comes with time. Main ways to obtain tasty and healthy meat are good nutrition and protecting animals from exposure to toxins and diseases. Organically raised animals have as much space as they need, which means less stress as they grow and develop - which they do at their own natural pace without artificial hormones. These animals are also able to build up their immune system and become more naturally resistant to diseases. Some farmers evem use homeopathic remedies to treat ill animals, to avoid introducing antibiotics that can invade the meat. When the time comes, animals are slaughtered in the most humane way possible, generally on or near the farm, avoiding the added stress of travel.
